OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss softball team recorded a perfect 5-0 mark in taking first place in the fourth annual Rebel Softball Fall Classic. Host Ole Miss knocked out MUW, 6-1, in the championship game Sunday to secure the crown.

The Blues entered the tournament's final game with a 4-0 mark, but fell behind early after freshman DeDe Justice stole home on the back end of a double steal in the second inning. Justice put UM ahead 3-0 in the third with a two-run homer to left field. Sophomore Desiree Layman hit 3-for-3 with an RBI as the Rebels pounded out 11 hits.

Junior righthander Lindsay Price picked up her second win of the tournament, tossing four hitless innings before being relieved by freshman Lindsay Whatley, who allowed only one hit and one unearned run over the final three innings.

In Ole Miss' only other game on Sunday, Leslie Day and Whatley combined on a five-inning no-hitter in a 8-0 mercy-rule victory over West Alabama. Day, a junior from Horn Lake, Miss., struck out five in earning her second win of the weekend.

Layman and freshmen Brooke Turner and Megan Kozar collected two hits apiece as Ole Miss totaled nine singles in the game. Layman, a shortstop from West Palm Beach, Fla., led the Rebels in the tournament, batting .714 (10-for-14) with three doubles and a home run.

MUW destroyed Christian Brothers, 8-0, and Jackson State, 9-0, earlier on Sunday and took second place in the event with a 4-1 record. CBU clocked out with a 2-2 mark, including a 10-0 dismantling of West Alabama on Sunday. Jackson State pulled out a 5-4, 10-inning win over UWA to post a 1-3 mark, while Delta State finished at 1-2.

The Ole Miss softball squad will open its 2002 season Feb. 1 at the University of New Mexico Tournament in Albuquerque. The Rebels' home-opener will be part of the Ole Miss Invitational with Evansville, Nicholls State and Tennessee-Martin Feb. 15-17 in Oxford.
