OXFORD, Miss. - Courtney Biddle and Lindley Beckman scored both Ole Miss goals for the second straight game as the Rebels shut out Duquesne, 2-0 on Sunday. The match ended a 2-0-1 homestand for Ole Miss, who climbs over .500 for the first time this season at 5-4-1.
After a scoreless first half where the Rebels could not capitalize on an 8-1 shot advantage, Ole Miss broke free in the 59th minute when an Anna Sanders indirect kick set up Biddle, a junior from Pittsburgh, with an 11-yard score. It marked Biddle's third consecutive game with a goal and Sanders' team-high sixth assist of the year.
Five minutes later, the Rebels extended their lead with Biddle feeding the ball to Beckman (3) who sent it to the upper right corner of the net from 19 yards away. Beckman, a freshman midfielder from Anchorage, Ky., is also riding a three-game goal-scoring streak and ranks second on the team in total points with nine.
The Rebels outshot the Dukes (1-6-1), 22-3, for the game. Goalkeepers Melinda Smith and Brittany Gillespie combined on the third UM shutout of 2001.
However, the victory was not without cost for Ole Miss who was hit again by the injury bug. Sophomore defender Erin Edmundson went down late in the first half with a possible tear of her anterior cruciate ligament. The Raleigh, N.C., native has started all but one game over the last two years, and could be the third member of the UM squad to miss the season with a torn ACL, joining freshman Kelly Renie and junior Megan Bowman.
"After a disappointing first half, the team responded well at halftime and played better in the second half," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "Different players have stepped up for us this season, which is a real positive. They kept fighting, despite the potential loss of a teammate.
"Now it's time to get ready for SEC."
The Rebels open Southeastern Conference play next weekend, taking to the road for LSU on Friday and Arkansas on Sunday. Ole Miss knocked off both teams a year ago in Oxford en route to a second straight SEC West crown.
