Volleyball Defeats Southern Miss For First Win Of Season

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss volleyball team defeated Southern Mississippi 3-1 Friday night to earn its first win of the season. The Lady Rebels went 1-1 on the first day of the Magnolia Invitational, falling 3-2 to Samford in a tough loss in the first match.
Lady Rebel freshman Elena Garcia (Austin, Texas) had a solid night in her home debut posting 22 kills, 11 digs and 3 block solos. It was her second double-double of the day, as she also had 15 kills and 17 digs versus Samford. Senior Jaime Burns also recorded her second double-double of the day and third of the year, with 14 kills and a team-leading 20 digs against USM. Abby Hollander made it three Lady Rebels with double-doubles, tallying 10 kills and 10 digs. She had seven total blocks to lead Ole Miss.
In game one, Ole Miss used a 17-7 run over the final stages to win 30-28. They trailed USM 7-2 early and then got down 20-13. The Lady Rebels rallied to square the game at 25-25 and led 28-27, but the Golden Eagles tied it up at 28-28. Ole Miss won the next two points.
Southern Miss controlled game two from the outset and never let up. The Golden Eagles, led by Kelly Tribble's seven kills, got off to a 6-0 start and led by as many as eight (25-17) late in the game. Ole Miss outscored USM 6-5 at the end, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
Game three started out much the same as the second, with USM taking a 6-0 lead. The Golden Eagles then led 16-9, but Ole Miss would tie it up 16-16. USM took a 19-16 lead, but the Lady Rebels would outscore the Golden Eagles 11-7 the rest of the way for the win.
The final game saw three lead changes and 12 ties. The two teams were tied 28-28 and Ole Miss went ahead 29-28 with Burns to serve. Southern Miss called timeout but it didn't matter as Burns hit a solid serve and the Lady Rebels nailed the point for a the victory.
The Lady Rebels will play two more matches on Saturday. They will face Tennessee-Martin at Noon and then conclude the tournament with Arkansas State at 7 p.m.
