Volleyball Loses Heartbreaker In First Match of Magnolia Invitational

In a battle of two teams looking for their first win of the season, the Ole Miss volleyball team lost a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to Samford University at the Magnolia Invitational at the Gillom Sports Center Friday.
The Lady Rebels are hosting the five-team invitational through Saturday. They will play Southern Mississippi at 7 p.m. Friday night. In the first match of the day, Tennessee-Martin defeated Arkansas State 3-1.
Ole Miss trailed in the first game and rallied to take a 31-29 win. In the second game, the Lady Rebels led by as much as four points, before seeing the Bulldogs storm back to tie the game. Samford would go on to win it 30-28. The Lady Rebels took game three 30-28 and led again in game four, but the Bulldogs would rally again to win 30-28. Samford won the decisive game 15-13 to improve to 1-4 on the year.
Senior Jaime Burns led the Lady Rebels with her second double-double of the season, 22 kills and 17 digs. Freshman Elena Garcia tallied 15 kills and 17 digs for her first double-double of the season. Leigh Rittiner finished with 11 kills.
Samford's Whitney Miller had 24 kills and eight digs while hitting for a .321 percentage to lead the Bulldogs.
