OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss sophomore quarterback Eli Manning has been named to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-America second team.

The Academic All-America squads are selected each year by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. Sports Information Directors nominate eligible athletes from their schools who are named to district teams prior to being voted upon the national level.

Manning, a 6-4, 212 pound sophomore from New Orleans, La., maintained a 3.54 GPA in Marketing. He is the 18th Ole Miss player to earn Academic All-America honors in the sport of football. Of the previous Ole Miss football recipients, offensive lineman Danny Hoskins was honored three times (1985-86-87), strong safety Jeff Noblin twice (1985-86), and free safety Todd Sandroni twice (1989-90).

"Eli continues to make his mark both on and off the field," said Ole Miss head coach David Cutcliffe. "Being selected as an Academic All-America is a tremendous accomplishment. We take great pride when our student-athletes are recognized for their high academic achievement."

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Verizon Academic All-America program, which was founded by CoSIDA in 1952 to recognize collegiate student-athletes for their outstanding achievements in the classroom and on the playing field. Over the past 50 years, the Verizon Academic All-America program has grown into one of the most recognized and prestigious collegiate scholar-athlete awards nationwide, honoring student-athletes from all NCAA championship sports.

Manning recently completed his first season as the starting quarterback at Ole Miss as he helped lead the Rebels to a 7-4 overall record and 4-4 mark in the Southeastern Conference, which tied for third in the Western Division after having been picked sixth in most preseason polls.

During the 2001 season, Manning set 16 school records and tied another. He shattered the record for most touchdown passes thrown in a single season with 31, which broke the previous school record of 18 shared by Charlie Conerly (1947) and Romaro Miller (2000). His 2,948 yards passing broke the previous single season record of 2,667 yards by Stewart Patridge in 1997.

Manning, who received the Conerly Trophy as Mississippi's top collegiate player for 2001, picked up honorable mention All-America honors from Football News and Collegefootballnews.com, while Football News also selected him as the Most Valuable Player on the Ole Miss team.
