MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Lady Rebel Sabrina Peppl was defeated Sunday by Middle Tennessee's Carien Venter, 6-1, 0-6 (10-5), in the final round of flight A singles at the Middle Tennessee Fall Invitational.
Due to bad weather throughout the weekend, matches going beyond two sets on Saturday and Sunday were decided by a super tiebreaker. Peppl reached the finals with her semifinals victory over Melissa Roach of Ball State, 6-4, 4-6 (11-9). Ole Miss teammate, Florencia Basile was Venter's semifinals opponent. The two battled to a first set tiebreak, with Venter pulling it out. Basile dropped the next set, and Venter advanced, 7-6(6), 6-0. Despite Basile and Peppl's losses, Lady Rebel head coach Mark Beyers felt that, overall, his players had a great weekend.
"As a team, we got exactly what we needed," said Beyers. "The players got matches under their belt, including several close ones which they managed to pull out. Of course, you want to win the flights outright, but there were still many positives. Our players beat many of the top players of the schools competing, and that was great to see."
