OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss defensive back Von Hutchins underwent surgery here Wednesday to repair a fracture in his left hand, but may still be able to play Saturday when the Rebels meet Arkansas in a Southeastern Conference clash in Fayetteville, Ark.
Hutchins sustained the injury to his left hand during Tuesday's practice while participating in a special teams drill. Following the injury, he was held out of all contact drills and later that evening X-rays confirmed the fracture.
Dr. Ed Field conducted the surgery Wednesday morning at the Baptist Memorial Hospital - North Mississippi Surgery Center.
"The surgery went well and a full recovery is expected," said Ole Miss head athletic trainer Tim Mullins. "We expect Von to be available this Saturday."
Hutchins was held out of practice Wednesday afternoon, but did observe the session.
A junior two-year letterman from Natchez, Miss., Hutchins has started all seven games at weak safety this season. He currently ranks second on the team with 43 tackles and his three pass interceptions ranks in a first place tie with Matt Grier. Hutchins has also recovered one fumble.
