OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss added a pair of left-handed pitchers to its 2004 softball roster Friday, receiving national letters of intent from Mary Jane Callahan from Muenster, Texas and Tara Willit from Okmulgee, Okla.
A three-time All-State selection, Callahan led Sacred Heart High School to state championship titles in 2000 and 2002. The 5-9 hurler finished her junior season with a 15-0-1 record and a 0.14 ERA. A part-time outfielder, Callahan also led the team with a .620 batting average at the plate. She is also a state champion in track and basketball.
"Mary Jane is a seasoned pitcher," said Rebel head coach Candi Letts. "She keeps batters off balance and takes complete control of the game when she's out there. She has a variety of pitches and is fun to watch."
Willit is a two-time all-region and all-conference pick at Okmulgee High School. The 5-10 southpaw led OHS to a conference championship in 2001, in addition to appearing on the honor roll for three years. Willit is a three-year Letter "O" Award recipient for academics and a two-time honoree in Who's Who among Young Americans.
"Tara is a lefthanded power pitcher," Letts said. "She has a ton of potential. She's very raw, and we're excited about getting her here and making her better. Tara is an impact pitcher."
