REBEL GAME NOTES
REBELS TO KICKOFF YEAR TWO OF THE BIANCO ERA: Ole Miss will open year two of the Mike Bianco era today when the Rebels host the Jacksonville State Gamecocks at 3:00 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. The Rebels are coming off one of the best seasons in school history, posting a 39-23-1 record and earning a berth in the NCAA New Orleans Regional. The 39 wins tied the 1977 team for the second most wins in school history, and was one shy of the school record of 40 set by the 1995 squad.

TV/RADIO: Today's game can be heard locally in Oxford on WTNM Supertalk Mississippi 105.5 FM, beginning at 2:45 p.m, with the Ole Miss pregame show. David Kellum and Gary Darby will call the action. The game can also be heard over the internet on the official Ole Miss athletic web site at www.OleMissSports.com.

SATURDAY'S GAME SLATED FOR 4:30 P.M.: Game two of this weekend's series with Jacksonville State is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., Saturday at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. The game time is listed at 1:30 p.m., on the 2002 Ole Miss schedule cards and posters, but was pushed back due to the Ole Miss men's basketball game with Florida, slated for 2 p.m., at the Tad Smith Coliseum.

EYE ON THE POLLS: Ole Miss enters today's game ranked No. 12 in this week's Collegiate Baseball poll, and was rated No. 14 in Collegiate Baseball's preseason Top 40. The Rebels were one of four SEC teams be ranked in all four of the major preseason college baseball polls, receiving rankings of No. 17 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), No. 18 by Baseball Weekly, and No. 20 by Baseball America. The other three SEC teams ranked in all four polls are LSU, Mississippi State and South Carolina.

OPENERS: Since the school's modern-era in baseball began in 1947, Ole Miss is 47-8 (.855 winning percentage) in season openers ... The Rebels carry a streak of 20 consecutive season-opening wins, starting with a 5-3 win over NE Louisiana to open the 1982 campaign. Ole Miss' last season-opening loss came at the hands of Livingston, 8-6 in 1981 ... In home openers since 1951, Ole Miss has a 46-5 (.902 winning percentage) mark, including a 13-0 record at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Overall, the Rebels have won 20 straight home openers, with the last loss also coming to Livingston, 8-6 in 1981 at old Swayze Field.

BIANCO IN ELITE COMPANY: Head Coach Mike Bianco's .627 winning percentage at Ole Miss is tied with Jake Gibbs (1972-1990) for the second highest in school history for Rebel coaches after 63 games at Ole Miss. Pete Shields (1923-1931) owns the best 63-game winning percentage in school history at .706, guiding the Rebels to a 44-18-1 mark from 1923-1925.

SERIES INFO: This weekend's series with Jacksonville State marks the first time the Rebels and Gamecocks have ever met on the baseball diamond.

REBELS VS. THE ATLANTIC SUN CONFERENCE: Ole Miss is 10-2 (.833 winning percentage) all-time against teams from the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Rebels are 5-0 versus Troy State, 1-0 against Central Florida, 1-0 versus Jacksonville (FL) and 3-2 against Samford. Ole Miss' last game against an Atlantic Sun team came in the 1995 NCAA Atlantic I Regional in Tallahassee, Fla., defeating UCF 10-4. The Rebels also defeated Troy State, 8-5, before playing the Golden Knights in the Atlantic I Regional.

SCOUTING JACKSONVILLE STATE: The Gamecocks enter today's game with a 3-0 record under first-year Head Coach Jim Case, who recently served four seasons as an assistant coach at Mississippi State under Ron Polk and Pat McMahon. Jacksonville State opened its 2002 campaign with a pair of wins over Alabama State last weekend, 10-1 and 22-11, and defeated UAB in Birmingham on Tuesday, 7-1. The Gamecocks are hitting .330 (35x106) as a team with four home runs, and have outscored their opponents 35-19. JSU has also hit eight doubles and is 4x5 in steals. Senior 1B Nic Brown and sophomore OF Ben Phillips are the team's leading hitters with a .500 average, both going 5x10 in the first three games. Former Rebel, junior SS Evan Conley is hitting .417 (5x12) with one homer and a team-leading seven RBIs. JSU pitching has a team ERA of 2.42 (26.0 IP, 7 ER), and opponents are hitting .198 against them (19x96) and have not hit a home run.

REBEL DIAMOND NOTES: Ole Miss is 79-37 (.681 winning percentage) in February since 1988 ... The Rebels' nine wins in February last season was the most dating back to 1988 ... Ole Miss batted .310 with 27 home runs in 34 games at Swayze Field last season, compared to .289 with 28 home runs away from Swayze Field ... Rebel pitchers posted a 3.41 ERA (298.0 IP, 113 ER) inside Swayze Field last season, while recording a 6.10 ERA (252.1 IP, 171 ER) away from home.

* Averaged over seven innings per start and worked at least eight innings in eight starts.

Threw 134 pitches, 82 for strikes ... Jake Bolig hit a lead-off home run in the second to tie the game at 1-1 ... Paul Powell then tripled and Luke Scott followed with a two-run blast to make it 3-1 ... Retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh innings ... Issued a lead-off walk to Jimbo McAuliff to start the eighth, and after McAuliff stole second Nebasett Brown followed with a bunt single to put runners on the corners ... After coaxing Jose Virgil to foul out to third, intentionally walked Bolig to load the bases ... Powell then hit a sac fly to left to break a 3-3 tie ... Was relieved by Nick Bradshaw after walking Scott to reload the bases ... Took a no decision in a 5-4, 10-inning loss.

PRIOR START: Pitched five full innings in the Rebels' 17-6 win over Tennessee on May 16 in the SEC Tournament opener ... Allowed the first two batters of the game to reach base safely as Chris Burke singled and Stevie Daniel was hit by a pitch ... After a throwing error by catcher Charlie Waite advanced the runners 90 feet, Jeff Christensen's RBI ground out to second scored Burke to make it 3-1 Ole Miss ... Tennessee tried a suicide squeeze to score Daniel from third, however, Montrenes fielded the ball between the mound and third, and his throw home was in time for Waite to apply the tag ... Brandon Hopkins hit a two-out solo home run in the fifth to make it 15-4 ... Was relieved by Nathan Lyons in the bottom of the sixth inning.
