REBEL GAME NOTES
AT A GLANCE: Ole Miss and Jacksonville State will meet in game two of this weekend's three-game series today at 4:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. The Rebels are looking to clinch the series after winning yesterday's contest 10-2. Friday's game was also Ole Miss' season opener.
TV/RADIO: Today's game can be heard locally in Oxford on WTNM Supertalk Mississippi 105.5 FM and on stations along the Ole Miss Baseball Radio Network. Air time locally in Oxford will be 4:15 p.m., and will be joined in progress by stations that will also be carrying the Ole Miss-Florida men's basketball game, scheduled for 2 p.m., at the Tad Smith Coliseum. David Kellum and Gary Darby will call the action. The game can also be heard over the internet on the official Ole Miss athletic web site at www.OleMissSports.com.
LAST TIME OUT: Senior right-hander Pete Montrenes struck out eight over six innings and No 12 Ole Miss scored six runs in the eighth inning to break open a 4-2 game en route to a 10-2 season-opening win over Jacksonville State Friday night. Junior third baseman Jonathan Swearingen went 4x5 with three RBIs in his Ole Miss debut and junior shortstop Chad Sterbens went 2x3 with two RBIs as the Rebels out-hit the Gamecocks 13-6. Sophomore right-hander Adam Yates retired nine of the 10 batters he faced over the final three innings to earn the save. The victory marked Ole Miss' 21st straight season-opening win.
EYE ON THE POLLS: Ole Miss enters today's game ranked No. 12 in this week's Collegiate Baseball poll, and was rated No. 14 in Collegiate Baseball's preseason Top 40. The Rebels were one of four SEC teams be ranked in all four of the major preseason college baseball polls, receiving rankings of No. 17 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), No. 18 by Baseball Weekly, and No. 20 by Baseball America. The other three SEC teams ranked in all four polls are LSU, Mississippi State and South Carolina.
BIANCO IN ELITE COMPANY: Head Coach Mike Bianco's .633 winning percentage at Ole Miss ranks second among Ole Miss coaches after 64 games at Ole Miss. Pete Shields holds the best mark, guiding the Rebels to a .711 winning percentage with a mark of 45-18-1 from 1923-25.
REBELS SET ATTENDANCE MARK FOR HOME OPENER: Yesterday's crowd of 2,371 set an Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field mark for a home opener, breaking the previous mark of 2,123 for the Rebels' 1994 home opener against Western Kentucky.
SERIES INFO: Yesterday's game marked the first-ever meeting between the Rebels and Gamecocks on the baseball diamond. Ole Miss leads the series 1-0.
REBELS VS. THE ATLANTIC SUN CONFERENCE: Ole Miss is 11-2 (.846 winning percentage) all-time against teams from the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Rebels are 5-0 versus Troy State, 1-0 against Central Florida, 1-0 versus Jacksonville (FL), 1-0 versus Jacksonville State and 3-2 against Samford. Prior to yesterday's game, Ole Miss' last game against an Atlantic Sun team came in the 1995 NCAA Atlantic I Regional in Tallahassee, Fla., defeating UCF 10-4. The Rebels also defeated Troy State, 8-5, before playing the Golden Knights in the Atlantic I Regional.
SCOUTING JACKSONVILLE STATE: The Gamecocks enter today's game with a 3-1 record under first-year Head Coach Jim Case, who recently served four seasons as an assistant coach at Mississippi State under Ron Polk and Pat McMahon. The Gamecocks are hitting .273 (47x172) as a team, led by junior INF Evan Conley's .417 (5x12) average. Conley also has one home run and leads the team with seven RBIs. The Gamecocks have a team ERA of 4.93, and opponents are hitting .246 against them (32x130) without a home run.
REBEL DIAMOND NOTES: Yesterday's win improved Ole Miss' record to 48-8 (.857 winning percentage) since 1947, and extended the Rebels' streak to 21 consecutive victories in season openers ... Since 1951, Ole Miss is now 47-5 (.904 winning percentage) in home openers, including 14-0 at Oxford-University Stadium/ Swayze Field ... Ole Miss is 80-37 (.684 winning percentage) in February since 1988 ... The Rebels' nine wins in February last season was the most dating back to 1988 ... The Rebels were 8x13 (.615) with runners in scoring position in Friday's game.
