OXFORD, Miss. - Chad Sterbens' RBI single to score Matt Tolbert broke a 3-3 tie and sparked a four-run sixth-inning as No. 12 Ole Miss defeated Jacksonville State 8-4 Saturday afternoon in front of 2,637 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
Junior right-hander J.R. Pickens (1-0) had a no-hitter through 5 1/3 innings and worked seven solid innings in his first Ole Miss start to earn the win. He allowed three runs, one earned, on three hits and three walks, while striking out eight.
John Chamblee (0-1), the second of Gamecock pitchers, was charged with the loss, allowing one run on one hit in an inning of relief.
Burney Hutchinson and Josh Christian both had three hits each as the Rebels out-hit the Gamecocks 13-7. Hutchinson hit his first home run of the year with a two-out solo shot in the first inning to put the Rebels up 1-0.
Jacksonville State took advantage of two Rebel errors in the second inning to push across two runs and take a 2-1 lead.
Ole Miss reclaimed the lead with two runs in third. Christian's RBI single scored Sterbens to tie the game and Christian later scored on an error by second baseman John McCarley off the bat of Bryce Morrison.
Evan Conley delivered Jacksonville State's first hit of the night with a one-out single in the sixth. It was the first of three straight Gamecock hits as Conley scored on pinch-hitter Bobby Crompton's single to tie the game at 3-3.
The two teams will conclude their three-game series Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
