TUSCALOOS, Ala. - Ole Miss played tough in the first 20 minutes of action, taking a 31-30 lead at the break, but came out lethargic in the opening moments of the second half and suffered an, 86-69, defeat at the hands of the Crimson Tide.
"We had some really good pressure on them on the first half," said Ole Miss head coach Ron Aldy. "The second half was a whole other story. Our intensity seemed to vanish and Alabama just took control from there."
Ole Miss (11-14, 3-9) forced Alabama (16-9, 6-6) into 17 first half turnovers on their way to the one-point halftime lead. The Lady Rebels cashed in on 15 points off the Crimson Tide turnovers to balance out their first half shooting woes. Ole Miss was cold from the floor as they hit just 10-of-31 shots in the first period.
"We shot it just about as poorly as we could today," said Aldy. "Had we not played great defense, we would not have been in this game at all. Our press gave them a lot of trouble in the first half, but we just did not pressure them enough after halftime."
Saundra Jackson led Ole Miss in scoring with 17 points. Von Kirk and Sherika Wright each added 12 points and Wright led Ole Miss on the boards with eight caroms. Kirk collected five steals in the loss.
Ole Miss shot a dismal 33.3 percent for the game and hit just 3-of-19 from beyond the arc. The Lady Rebels cashed in on 22-of-32 free throws.
Shondra Johnson led Alabama with 23 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Beth Vice and Katie Sipe each chipped in 16 points and LaNisha Cartwell had 15.
The Crimson Tide shot 55.8 percent from the field, including 8-of-17 three point shots. They made 20-of-32 from the foul line and out-rebounded Ole Miss 46-34.
Ole Miss will play its final home game of the 2001-02 season on Thursday, Feb. 21, when they host Tennessee. The game will be played at 7 p.m. in Tad Smith Coliseum.
