OXFORD, Miss. - No. 10 Ole Miss scored nine runs in the first two innings to cruise to a 20-6 win over Mississippi Valley State Tuesday afternoon at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
Junior shortstop Chad Sterbens went 4-for-5 with two RBIs to pace the Rebels at the plate as Ole Miss out-hit the Delta Devils 19-12.
Sophomore right-hander Adam Yates (1-0) pitched two innings to earn the win. He allowed two runs on four hits and one walk, while striking out three.
The Rebels used seven pitchers on the afternoon, and a total of 24 players saw action for Ole Miss.
Josh Hailey (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing nine runs, four earned, on six hits and four walks, and struck out one in 1 1/3 innings of work.
Robert Reynolds went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Mississippi Valley State, including a two-run home run in the first to give the Delta Devils a brief 2-0 lead.
The Rebels answered with three runs in the first, and took advantage of two Delta Devils errors to plate six runs in the second and build a 9-2 lead.
Junior Dustin Cliburn homered in his first career at bat as a Rebel in the sixth, with a two-out solo shot to make it 18-6.
Ole Miss will return action Friday when the Rebels open a three-game series with South Alabama at 3 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
