BATON ROUGE, La. - The Ole Miss women's basketball team trailed by just one point at the half, 37-36, but allowed LSU to outscore them 14-2 in the first four minutes of the second half. The Lady Tigers went on to win the game 81-70.
LSU, despite playing with just seven players, used a balanced attack with four players in double figures to defeat Ole Miss.
"LSU was able to capitalize from every position on the floor," said Ole Miss head coach Ron Aldy. "They are very athletic from top to bottom and pose a very difficult match-up for us."
Ole Miss started the game out hot from the outside as they made 6-of-12 shots from behind the arc in the first half to trail by just one at the break. The Lady Rebels trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half of play, but never gave up. Ole Miss had the ball trailing by seven with just under a minute to play. Von Kirk hit a three with 48 seconds remaining, but the Lady Rebels were called for an illegal screen on the play, wiping out the basket and sending the Lady Tigers to the line to seal the game.
Freshman Ally Kelly led the Lady Rebels with 19 points on 3-of-5 shooting from three-point land. Fellow freshman Carletta Brown had 16 points and five assists and Kirk finished with 14 points. Kelly and Kirk led Ole Miss on the boards with four a piece.
"Ally Kelly and Carletta Brown both really stepped up their games today," said Aldy. "They way they came to battle today was very encouraging."
Ole Miss made 21-of-52 shots from the field, good for 40.4 percent. The Lady Rebels finished the game hitting 9-of-22 three-point baskets and 19-of-22 from the foul line.
The Lady Tigers were led by Aiyesha Smith with 23 points and nine rebounds in the paint and Doneeka Hodges with 14 points and 10 boards from the perimeter. Foward Ke-Ke Tardy added 19 points and seven rebounds and guard Roneeka Hodges chipped in 13 points.
LSU shot 51.0 percent from the field, despite making just 1-of-9 from behind the arc. The Lady Tigers made 28-of-36 free throws and out-rebounded Ole Miss 34-26.
The Lady Rebels return to Tad Smith Coliseum to host Kentucky on Thursday, Feb. 7. Game time is set for 7 p.m. (CT).
