OXFORD, Miss. - ,Senior right-hander Pete Montrenes struck out nine and allowed one run on one hit and five walks over seven innings to pitch No. 10 Ole Miss (7-2) to a 6-1 win over Eastern Illinois (1-1) Friday evening at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field, in the opener of a three-game weekend series.
Montrenes (3-0) carried a no hitter into the sixth inning before Pete Pirman hit a one-out single to right. He then walked the next two batters to score Chris Uhle, who drew a one-out walk, to cut Ole Miss' lead to 4-1. Montrenes then fanned Bret Pignatiello and coaxed Brian Nickell to foul out to the catcher to escape further damage.
Adam Yates came on in relief in the eighth and pitched two scoreless innings to close out the game.
Senior outfielder Burney Hutchinson went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. He hit a sacrifice fly to right field in his final at bat in the seventh to score Jonathan Swearingen and cap the night's scoring.
Panther starter Scott Metz (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out three in 4 1/3 innings.
Eastern Illinois was without Jim Schmitz, a former Ole Miss assistant under Don Kessinger, as he was serving the second of a three-game suspension by the Ohio Valley Conference. Assistant Coach Mike Rodgers, a pitcher for the Rebels from 1996-97, was the Panthers' acting head coach.
Game two of this weekend's series is set for Saturday 1:30 p.m, at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Saturday's game will be carried by stations along the Ole Miss Radio Network.
