KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Despite some impressive home runs, the Ole Miss softball team could not match the Tennessee offense on the road in dropping all three games of both teams' Southeastern Conference-opening series. The Lady Volunteers swept Sunday's doubleheader, 5-1 and 9-0, at Tyson Park.

Ole Miss (11-8, 0-3 SEC) struck first in the early game with a Desiree Layman first-pitch solo home run in the second inning. It was the second homer of the weekend for Layman, a sophomore from West Palm Beach, Fla., and the Rebels' fourth as a team.

However, Ole Miss gathered only one hit the rest of the game against the SEC's top hurler Stephanie Humphrey (16-4). The junior righthander earned her second win of the series, 5-1, while recording a school-record 14 strikeouts.

The Lady Vols (26-7-1, 3-0 SEC) moved on top in the third inning, using two UM errors and a pair of run-scoring singles by Carissa Roustan and Humphrey to plate four unearned runs.

Rebel junior Leslie Day (4-3) tied her career high with seven strikeouts but also allowed seven hits in the complete-game loss.

The series finale belonged to UT catcher Adrianna Wilson, who belted a two-run double in each of the first two innings in handing the Lady Vols an early 4-0 advantage. Wilson hit 3-for-4 with four RBI in the game.

Tennessee lefthander Leigh Ann Ellis (8-2) made the lead stand with her second shutout of the season, limiting Ole Miss to one Brooke Turner single. Rebel freshman Lindsey Whatley (4-3) tossed five innings in her SEC debut, surrendering nine hits in the loss.

Tennessee wrapped up the game in the sixth inning by mercy rule on a Roustan three-run walk-off homer.

Ole Miss' offensive difficulties on Sunday was in contrast to Saturday's game one slugfest, in which Tennessee prevailed 7-4. Four Rebel home run records were broken, including most homers by an Ole Miss squad in one game (3) and most by both teams (5).

Andrea Brahs blasted her second long ball of the year in the second inning, and two innings later, Layman ripped her first to raise the Rebels' 2002 total to 10 - a new UM single-season high after only 17 games.

Another Ole Miss record fell in the fifth inning when DeDe Justice blasted her sixth dinger, placing the freshman from Vero Beach, Fla., all alone atop the single-season individual homer chart.

Tennessee responded to the Rebel power surge with some yardwork of her their own, recording a pair of two-run homers by Blaine Teasley (9) and Adrianna Wilson (8) in the UT fourth. Humphrey tossed four innings and reentered in the seventh in picking up her SEC-best 15th win.

Ole Miss takes a break from conference play next weekend, traveling to Kissimmee, Fla., to compete in the Rebel Games. The Rebels are in action Friday and Saturday and are matched up with Bowling Green, Butler, Vermont and Wisconsin-Green Bay.
