OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss punter-kicker Shea Orrell of Senatobia, Miss., is expected to miss spring football drills this week after having surgery a week ago.
"Shea had thyroid cancer, which was surgically removed last week," said Dr. Ford Dye. "He will require some additional medical treatment, but Shea's prognosis is very good."
"We are hopeful that Shea will be able to return to practice next week," said Ole Miss head trainer Tim Mullins. The Rebels will conclude spring drills here Saturday, April 6 with the annual "Grove Bowl" Red-Blue game to be played at 6:00 p.m. in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
Orrell, who transferred to Ole Miss from Northwest (Miss.) Community College last fall, did not see any action during the 2001 season and was redshirted.
During his two seasons at Northwest, Orrell earned honorable mention All-America honors after setting the national junior college record for points after touchdowns made in a career with 124. He also set national J.C. records for scoring by a kicker in a career with 188 points and for PATs made in a season with 71.
