OXFORD, Miss. - Kris Grunwald, a former head coach in the SEC, has joined the Ole Miss volleyball staff as an assistant coach, Lady Rebel head coach Joe Getzin announced Thursday.

Grunwald comes to Ole Miss from the University of Michigan where he had been serving as the Compliance Services Coordinator. He assisted with all compliance related issues in the University of Michigan Athletic Department.

No stranger to the SEC, Grunwald spent two seasons (1998, 1999) as the head coach at Auburn University. In his first year, Grunwald led the Tigers to a 22-9 overall record, 9-6 in the SEC. In 1999, Auburn posted a 19-11 overall record, 8-7 in the SEC.

Prior to being named head coach at Auburn, Grunwald served as the assistant coach from 1994-98. While he was an assistant coach, the Tigers went 73-47 overall. During his last two years as an assistant, Auburn posted a 21-9 record in the SEC.

Before going to Auburn, Grunwald served as an assistant coach at Florida State from 1991-93.

"We are honored and very excited to have someone of Kris' ability joining our program," Getzin said. "His background and the success that he had at Auburn will help us build our program that much quicker."

Grunwald was a four-year starter on the nationally-ranked George Mason University volleyball team. He was a three-time Asics Honorable Mention All-American and a three-time first team All-East selection. Grunwald started on the 1987 NCAA Final Four team and participated in the 1987 United States Olympic Festival.

Grunwald earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from George Mason University in 1991. He received his Master's Degree in Mathematics Education in 1993 from Florida State University.
