OXFORD, Miss. - Freshman right fielder Seth Smith went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and junior right-hander Kyle Bateman pitched three scoreless innings to lead No. 15 Ole Miss to a 7-4 win over Mississippi Valley State Tuesday evening at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
Smith drove in the Rebels' first run of the game with an RBI single to score Clint Farrar during a three-run first inning. He later had an RBI ground out to score Barry Gunter to make it 5-0 in the fourth.
Bateman (1-0) allowed no hits and issued two walks, while striking out two in making his first career start.
Starter Josh Hailey (1-6) suffered the loss for Mississippi Valley State (5-25), allowing five runs on four hits and five walks in four innings.
Temetric Thomas and Robert Reynolds had two hits each for the Delta Devils as they out-hit the Rebels 9-8.
Ole Miss (18-7) will next travel to Kentucky to open a three-game Southeastern Conference series Friday at 5 p.m.
