REBEL GAME NOTES
AT A GLANCE: No. 9 Ole Miss (10-2) looks to extend its win streak to five games when the Rebels host the Indiana State Sycamores (2-2) in the opener of a three-game series tonight at 6:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Senior RHP Pete Montrenes (3-0, 2.25) will get the starting nod on the mound for the Rebels. He will be opposed by junior LHP Mitch Stetter, who pitched five scoreless innings last Saturday against Louisville in his first start of the year. Stetter allowed just one hit and struck out nine to earn Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week honors. The Sycamores enter this weekend's series having split a pair of midweek games, losing 8-6 at home to Saint Louis on Tuesday before posting an 8-0 shutout win at Austin Peay Wednesday.
LAST TIME OUT: Burney Hutchinson and Bryce Morrison both hit two home runs and five pitchers combined on a one-hitter as Ole Miss blanked Memphis 12-0 Tuesday evening at AutoZone Park. Hutchinson finished the night 3x5 with a career-high five RBIs, and Morrison was also 3x5 as 10 different Rebels recorded a hit in an 18-hit attack. Nick Bradshaw (1-1) worked five innings after coming on in the second to earn the win, allowing one hit and two walks, and fanned five. Freshman RHP Alan Horne pitched a perfect first inning on 11 pitches before being lifted due to a limited pitch count. The appearance was the first of his Horne's career after being selected in the first round of June's Major League Baseball Draft by the Cleveland Indians.
IN THE POLLS: Ole Miss moved up one spot in this week's Collegiate Baseball poll to No. 9, jumped two places to No. 12 in both the Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches and National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association polls, and advanced one slot to No. 19 in the Baseball America Top 25.
REBELS VS. INDIANA STATE: Tonight's game marks the fifth meeting, and the first since 1979, between the Rebels and Sycamores. Ole Miss holds a 3-1 advantage in the series, with all four previous meetings taking place in Oxford. The Rebels and Sycamores played a pair of single games in 1977 and 1978, with Ole Miss claiming 4-3 and 8-5 victories. The two teams then split a two-game series in 1979, with the Rebels winning 8-7 in 12 innings, and Indiana State earning a split with a 6-5 win in game two.
SCOUTING THE SYCAMORES: Indiana State is hitting .336 (49x146) as a team, with 13 of its 49 hits going for doubles. Sophomore Michael Miller is 5x10 with one homer and four RBIs in three games, and senior Tommy Jeffers is 8x18 (.444) with one home run and five runs batted in. Sycamore pitchers have a team ERA of 3.03 (35.2 IP, 12 ER), and opponents are hitting .214 (28x131) against them with three home runs. Indiana States features both the reigning Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, Jeffers, and Pitcher of the Week, Friday's scheduled starter Mitch Stetter. The Sycamores are coming off a 32-28 campaign in 2001, including a sixth-place finish in the MVC with a 15-16 record.
AFTER 12 GAMES LAST SEASON: The Rebels were 9-3 after 12 games last season ... Ole Miss was hitting .312 (117x375) with 24 doubles, eight triples, 12 home runs and 80 RBIs ... The Rebels stole eight bases in 11 attempts and grounded into six double plays ... They were outscoring their opponents 92-56 ... BIANCO AIMS FOR WIN NO. 50 AT OLE MISS: Ole Miss Head Coach Mike Bianco is aiming for his 50th win at Ole Miss, and the 150th of his career in tonight's game. He would become the second fastest coach in school history to reach 50 wins with the Rebels, doing so in his 76th game. Pete Shields reached the 50-win plateau in 71 games from 1923-1926. Bianco is 49-25-1 (.660 winning percentage) at Ole Miss, and has a career mark of 149-96-1 (.608 winning percentage).
CHARTING BURNEY: OF Burney Hutchinson is a triple shy of the Ole Miss career record of 14 held by Kevin Kessinger (1989-92) and Nate Riddley (1989-92) ... With two home runs Tuesday night, he became the sixth player in school history to hit 30 career homers ... Is four runs away from tying Jason Huisman (1995-98) for fourth-place in career runs scored with 150 ... Needs four RBIs to tie Mike Pomeranz (1976-79) for fifth place on the school's career list with 142 ... Is tied for 10th in career doubles at Ole Miss with Chad Hill (1997-2000) at 37.
