Montrenes Pitches No. 8 Ole Miss Past Auburn

OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss senior right-hander Pete Montrenes out-dueled Auburn junior right-hander Levale Speigner as the eighth-ranked Rebels edged the Tigers 2-1 Saturday afternoon in front of 3,287 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field, and even this weekend's Southeastern Conference series at a game a piece. Auburn won Friday's series opener 10-3.
Montrenes (8-2) carried a shutout into the ninth inning before being lifted after a one-out double by Scott Schade that scored Javon Moran and made 2-1.
Junior T.J. Beam came on in relief and coaxed Doug Vines to fly out to left and Todd Pratt to line out to right to end the game and earn credit for his third save of the year.
Montrenes allowed the one run on six hits and one walk, and struck out six in his longest outing of the season to earn the win.
Speigner (6-4) allowed two runs on four hits and two walks, and struck out two in 6 2/3 innings, while suffering the loss. He was relieved by Eric Brandon with one out in the seventh and trailing 1-0, after Chad Sterbens hit a lead-off double and a sac bunt by Drew Rogers moved Sterbens to third.
Josh Christian made it 2-0 after lifting a high fly ball to shallow left that allowed Sterbens to tag and hustle home.
Clint Farrar drove in the Rebels' first run of the game in the third with a two-out single that scored Jonathan Swearingen.
Seth Smith went 2-for-4 for Ole Miss, and Moran and Schade both went 2-for-4 for Auburn as both teams recorded six hits each.
The two teams will conclude the series with the rubber-match Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Freshman right-hander Alan Horne (1-1, 5.91 ERA) is scheduled to start for Ole Miss against Auburn junior right-hander Mike Mueller (1-0, 0.00 ERA).
