The 35th-ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team will be the No. 8 seed in the upcoming SEC Tournament April 18-21 hosted by the University of South Carolina. The Lady Rebels will face the No. 9 seed Alabama, Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Sam Daniel Tennis Center in the first round.
Ole Miss concluded the regular season winning its last three, including a 6-0 shutout over arch-rival Mississippi State last Friday. The Lady Rebels finished up 11-9 and 4-7 in the SEC, losing the SEC West title by a slim margin. Ole Miss went 3-1 against the West this year with their only loss coming against Auburn.
Sophomore Karem Harboe has won six SEC matches in a row and is 22-11 on the year. Senior Alesya Ignatieva became the third Lady Rebel to notch 20 wins for the season with her victory in the Mississippi State match. She has won eight of her last nine matches.
Alabama comes into the match having lost five in a row, including a 4-2 setback to Auburn last weekend. The Crimson Tide are ranked No. 42 with a 12-9 overall record, 3-8 in the SEC. They are led by Selia Mathew at No. 1 singles.
This will be the second year in a row that Ole Miss and Alabama have met in the SEC Tournament first round. Alabama defeated the Lady Rebels 4-1 last year in the tournament in Starkville. Ole Miss leads the all-times series 23-6 and has won 21 of 23 matches.
The winner of this match will face No. 1 seed and SEC Champion Georgia in the quarterfinals Friday.
