BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - ,Mira Radu, a junior on the Ole Miss women's tennis team has been named to the All-SEC second team as the 2002 women's tennis awards were announced Wednesday night at the SEC Tournament banquet in Columbia, S.C.
This marks Radu's first selection to the All-SEC team. Currently ranked No. 13 in the nation, Radu has enjoyed an excellent year, posting a 32-13 overall record, 13-6 at No. 1 singles.
She has won 13 of her last 19 matches dating back to the fall. Of her 13 dual match wins, 11 have come in straight sets.
"This is a tremendous honor for Mira," head coach Mark Beyers said. "It is a direct result of her excellent record and high national ranking. The SEC is the toughest conference in the nation with so many top players. There are plenty of great players who didn't even make it on the All-SEC team including one of our own, Alesya Ignatieva, who is having a great year too. That shows the strength of our conference up and down.
"For Mira to be among so many great players, is a tribute to her hard work and dedication. Hopefully she can end the year with a solid showing in the SEC and NCAA Tournaments."
The Lady Rebels (11-9, 4-7) open up play in the SEC Tournament Thursday at 10 a.m. against the No. 9 seed Alabama. The winner of that match plays top-ranked Georgia Friday in the uarterfinals.
