OXFORD, Miss. - Desiree Layman's seventh inning RBI-double broke a tie game and handed Ole Miss a 3-2 victory in game two of its softball series with Arkansas Wednesday. The Rebels split the doubleheader after the Lady Razorbacks survived a pitcher's duel in the opener, 1-0.
The rubber-match of the three-game series is Thursday at 5 p.m. CST at Ole Miss Softball Complex, where the Rebels boast a 12-7 mark this season.
Ole Miss (24-20, 6-14 SEC) struck first in game two with Jessica Hamilton singling home Nicole Alger in the second inning for the Rebels' first hit and run of the contest. A junior from Nashville, Hamilton batted 3-for-5 with an RBI in the twin bill.
The SEC West rivals traded runs in the third, with each team plating a runner off a defensive miscue. Britte Hardy reached home for Ole Miss on a wild pitch.
Arkansas (30-22, 9-14 SEC) knotted the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning off a Kim Eiben RBI-double, and the score would remain the same until Layman's final-inning heroics. With Brooke Turner on first base following a one-out single, Layman, a sophomore shortstop from West Palm Beach, Fla., ripped a ball to right-center field, allowing Turner to come across the plate just ahead of the relay. The victory ended a season-long seven-game skid.
Lindsey Whatley (8-6) hurled her third consecutive complete game in the win. The freshman righthander limited the Lady 'Backs to five hits and one unearned run. Valanna Lyons (4-7) suffered the loss in relief surrendering the baseknock to Turner before giving way to Heather Schlichtman, who allowed the Layman game-winning double.
Schlichtman and UM junior Leslie Day dueled in game one in a matchup of two of the SEC's best this season. Day (9-7) gave up one less hit and three less baserunners, but relinquished the game's lone run in the second inning off a Rachel Talley run-scoring single.
Schlichtman (14-7), a sophomore righthander, restricted the Rebels to five hits but exited in the seventh with Ole Miss threatening with two runners on base. However, Talley induced a groundout for the game's final play and her third save of the year.
Rebel junior Phyllis Manley batted 2-for-2 in the opener.
