Search Committee Named To Find New Athletics Director

OXFORD, Miss. - A 10-member search committee has been appointed to recommend candidates for a new director of athletics at the University of Mississippi.

The committee is made up of faculty and staff, the president of the Associated Student Body and the president of the Alumni Association. Dr. Robert Weems, professor of law, is its chair.

"It is my intention that the committee meet within the next few days and begin work immediately to develop a list of candidates to be considered," said Weems.

John Shafer, who served as Ole Miss athletics director for nearly four years, resigned the position effective April 15. Ole Miss Chancellor Robert Khayat said he hopes to fill the post by July 1.

On the committee with Weems are: Dr. Steve Brown, chair of music, Dr. Linda Chitwood, interim associate dean of Applied Science, Dr. Briggs Hopson, alumni association president, J.W. Kahler, associate director of the physical plant, Dr. Tyrus McCarty, special affairs administrator in the School of Engineering, Dr. Andrew Mullins, executive assistant to the chancellor, Tim Mullins, head athletics trainer, Drew Snyder, student body president, and Dr. Carolyn Staton, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs.
