Ole Miss Drops Softball Rubber-Match with Arkansas

OXFORD, Miss. - A DeDe Justice home run was not enough for Ole Miss as it dropped the finale of its three-game set with Arkansas Thursday, 5-2. The Lady Razorbacks (31-22, 10-14 SEC) take the series, 2-1, after the two teams split Wednesday's doubleheader.
With the Rebels (24-21, 6-15 SEC) down by three in the third inning, Justice ripped the first pitch over the left field wall for her 10th round-tripper of the season. The freshman from Vero Beach, Fla., has already broken the Ole Miss single-season home run record, and needs only two more to surpass the career mark in only her first year as a Rebel. She was 2-for-3 in the game.
Despite the Justice long ball, Arkansas hurler Heather Schlichtman (15-7) held the UM bats in check in registering her second win of the series. The All-SEC righthander limited Ole Miss to four hits in the complete game in addition to notching her first career homer in the second inning - a two-run shot that highlighted a UA three-run rally.
Julie Young padded the Lady 'Back lead in the fifth inning with an RBI-single, and again in the seventh, reaching home on a throwing error - one of four Rebel miscues. Young collected three hits on the day, while Schlichtman had two.
Trailing by four runs, Ole Miss would rally in the final frame, loading the bases with one out. Julie Baumann's RBI-groundout plated pinch-runner Lindsay Price, but it would be the only run to come across for the Rebels, who drop only their second home series of the season.
Leslie Day (9-8) lasted 4.2 inning innings in defeat, allowing nine hits and four runs. Reliever Lindsey Whatley gave up three hits and one unearned run over the final 2.1.
Ole Miss takes to the road next, facing off with No. 25 Georgia in a three-game series in Athens. The Rebels and Bulldogs play a doubleheader Saturday and the finale Sunday, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. ET both days.
