REBEL GAME NOTES
AT A GLANCE: No. 9 Ole Miss (31-8, 11-5 SEC) aims to secure a fifth straight SEC series win for the first time since 1995, when the Rebels meet the second-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide (33-6, 12-4 SEC) in game two of this weekend's Southeastern Conference series today at 2 p.m., at Sewell-Thomas Stadium in Tuscalooa, Ala. After winning yesterday's series opener 4-3, Ole Miss pulled to within a game of Alabama for first place in the SEC Western Division. Senior right-hander Pete Montrenes (8-2, 3.56) is scheduled to start on the mound for the Rebels, while Alabama is slated to counter with sophomore lefty Jeffrey Norris (3-0, 2.22). Today's game can be heard on stations along the Ole Miss Radio Network beginning at 1:45 p.m., with David Kellum and Gary Darby, and over the internet on the official Ole Miss athletic web site, www.OleMissSports.com.
LAST TIME OUT: T.J. Beam struck out Travis Garner with the tying run on second as No. 9 Ole Miss ended No. 2 Alabama's 27-game home winning streak dating back to last season, with a 4-3 win Friday afternoon. Josh Christian broke a 1-1 tie with a three-run home run in the eighth inning to make it 4-1. Alabama would answer with two runs in the bottom of the eighth, before Beam would close the door with 1.1 scoreless innings to earn his fourth save of the year. J.R. Pickens (7-2) went seven-plus innings to earn the win, allowing two runs on eight hits and four walks, while striking out. Alabama starter Lance Cormier worked all nine innings in suffering the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on 11 hits and four three walks, while striking out four. Drew Rogers went 3-for-4 on the afternoon to lead the Rebels at the plate, however, the Crimson Tide held a 12-11 advantage in the hit column.
IN THE POLLS: Ole Miss remained at No. 9 in this week's Collegiate Baseball Top 30, while moving to No. 12 in both the Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches and Baseball America Top 25 polls. The Rebels are up one spot from last week in the Baseball Weekly/ESPN rankings, and three places in the Baseball America poll. Ole Miss dropped three spots in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association poll to No. 11 after being ranked No. 8 last week ... Alabama is ranked No. 2 in the Collegiate Baseball Top 30, and No. 4 by both Baseball Weekly and Baseball America.
OLE MISS ADDS HOME GAME: Ole Miss will host McNeese State on Tuesday, May 14 at 6:30 p.m., in a make-up game for the Rebels' March 12 game at Louisiana-Monroe being canceled due to inclement weather. Since the ULM game was not originally an Ole Miss home game, all season ticket holders will be admitted free at the gate upon presentation of a torn or unused ticket stub from any earlier played game this season. If you are a season ticket holder, and do not have any unused tickets or stubs, see the Swayze Field Ticket Office on game day for your admission pass. The season ticket holder will have the right to sit in the seats they purchased for the season. Tickets will also be available for purchase at the Ticket Office.
AFTER 39 GAMES LAST SEASON: The Rebels were 27-11-1 after 39 games last season ... Ole Miss was hitting .299 (401x1,339) with 69 doubles, 16 triples, 38 home runs and 237 RBIs ... The Rebels stole 33 bases in 46 attempts and grounded into 31 double plays ... They were outscoring their opponents 274-209 ... Rebel pitchers had a 4.34 ERA (344.0 IP, 166 ER), allowing 354 hits, including 28 home runs, walked 132 and had struck out 260 ... Ole Miss had committed 55 errors in 39 games.
REBELS VS. CRIMSON TIDE: This afternoon's meeting is the 297th all-time between the Ole Miss Rebels and Alabama Crimson Tide ... Alabama leads the series 172-122-2 ... Yesterday's 4-3 win gave the Rebels five straight wins against the Crimson Tide for the first time since winning straight meetings during the 1969 and 1970 campaigns ... A win today, would give Ole Miss its first series win in Tuscaloosa since winning 2-of-3 in 1996, ironically on the weekend of April 19-21, and would give the Rebels back-to-back series wins against the Tide since winning five straight from 1992-1996 ... The two teams have split the last four SEC series dating back to 1998, with the home team winning all four series ... Alabama is the last team to win a series on the road, sweeping the Rebels in Oxford in 1997 ... Since 1998, Ole Miss has won eight of the last 14 meetings ... The Rebels are 66-88-2 all-time against the Crimson Tide in Oxford, 53-79 in Tuscaloosa, and 3-5 at neutral sites.
REBEL NOTEBOOK: Ole Miss is 18-3 since being swept at Florida, March 15-17 ... Since the 1999 Alabama series, Ole Miss has won 13 of its last 14 SEC series when winning the conference opener. The only series loss during that span came at Mississippi State in 2000, when the Rebels took game one, 4-1, before losing the next two games, 10-4 and 12-3 ... The Ole Miss pitching staff has recorded a 1.80 ERA (100.0 IP, 20 ER) during the month of April ... At 31-8, Ole Miss is 23 games above the .500-mark for the first time since being 35-12 in 1986 ... A win today, would put the Rebels 24 games above .500 for the first time in school history.
