Volleyball Inks Wisconsin Standout

OXFORD, Miss. - Rachel Refenes of Menomonee Falls, Wisc., has signed a national letter of intent to join the Ole Miss volleyball program beginning in the 2002-03 academic year, head coach Joe Getzin announced Tuesday.

Refenes, a 6-3 middle blocker, hails from Milwaukee Lutheran High School, where she lettered in volleyball three years. She also earned two letters in track and field and one letter in basketball.

As a senior this past season Refenes earned All-State Honorable Mention, first team All-Conference and was the Conference Player of the Year. She captained her team to the conference championship and the WIAA Sectional Semifinals. Refenes totaled 127 solo blocks, 391 kills and 162 digs her senior year. During her junior year, the team also won the conference title and reached the WIAA Sectional Finals.

Refenes also plays for the Milwaukee Sting 18 Black Club Team, which has already qualified for the USAV National Championships.

"We are very excited to have Rachel joining our program," Getzin said. "She comes from a well-established club team that has experienced a lot of success. With her size and athletic ability we feel she can come in and compete for a starting spot. She will definitely help us in our continued plans to improve the program and take it to the next level."

In addition to being an accomplished volleyball player, Refenes earned All-Conference Honorable Mention honors in basketball and helped lead her team to the 2001 Conference Championship. Refenes throws the shot put and discus in track and won the WISAA State title in 2000 in the discus and finished fifth in the shot put and discus in 2001.

Refenes becomes the second signee of the 2002-03 class joining Austin, Texas native Katie Griffin, who signed in the fall.
