OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss volleyball team went 2-1 at the Mississippi State Volleyball Tournament this past weekend in Starkville to finish second and run their record to 4-3 this spring.
The Lady Rebels defeated Mississippi State in the morning match Saturday, 20-30, 30-28, 15-9. Later that afternoon, Ole Miss took out Samford 30-27, 30-21, before falling to Tulane 16-30, 38-36, 11-15.
This was the second spring tournament of the year for the Lady Rebels, who posted a 2-2 record at LSU's spring tournament on March 23. In that tournament, the Lady Rebels defeated Louisiana Tech and Southern Mississippi in three games and lost to Southeastern Louisiana and Memphis.
The Lady Rebels have impressed their new head coach Joe Getzin, who likes what he sees this spring from the team.
"I think the girls are responding well to the new coaching style," Getzin said. "They are learning how to play hard on every point and maintain a consistent level. They are enjoying playing right now and that's a good thing to see. Kris Grunwald (assistant coach) has really added a new dimension to our team.
"Not to single out anyone individually, but I am pleased with Elena Garcia, who is stepping up and showing how to lead the team by her actions on the court," Getzin added. "She plays hard on every point until the end."
The Lady Rebels will continue their spring action with two more tournaments. This weekend they will fly to Dallas to participate in the SMU Spring Tournament. The field includes North Texas, Texas-Arlington, Tulsa and host SMU. Following the SMU Tournament, Ole Miss will conclude the spring at the University of New Orleans Tournament, April 20.
