OXFORD, Miss. - Freshman outfielder Seth Smith went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead No. 9 Ole Miss to its 11th straight win with a 7-1 victory over Mid-South rival Memphis Tuesday evening in front of 1,603 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. The 11-game winning streak is the Rebels' (26-7) longest since a 15-game streak in 1964.
Smith broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth with an RBI single that scored Burney Hutchinson and key a three-run inning. He added a two-run single in the sixth to make it 6-1, driving in his 35th and 36th runs of the season to break Matt Tolbert's Ole Miss freshman RBI record.
Senior left-hander Mike Gray (2-0) worked five innings to earn the win. He allowed one run on six hits and two walks, and struck out five.
Burney Hutchinson went 3-for-5 and Jonathan Swearingen went 3-for-3 with an RBI as the Rebels out-hit the Tigers 13-8.
Memphis (11-17) starter Nick Steht (0-3) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits and four walks in four-plus innings. He also struck out two.
Paul Cookman, Brent Dlugach and Andy Gesell all had two hits each for the Tigers.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first on Dlugach's RBI double to Cookman, who singled to start the game. Ole Miss then tied the game in the second on Charlie Waite's base-hit to center that scored Josh Christian.
Ole Miss will continue its nine-game home stand Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m., against Murray State at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Junior right-hander Kyle Bateman (1-0, 1.42) is scheduled to make the start on the hill for the Rebels.
