COLUMBIA, S.C. - After heavy rains postponed first pitch four hours, Ole Miss scored early but could not withstand the South Carolina offense in dropping both games of a softball twin bill. The Lady Gamecocks (40-16, 19-10 SEC) rallied in the opener, 5-4, and commanded game two, 10-0.
Ole Miss (25-28, 7-22 SEC) recorded the evening's first run when Nicole Alger doubled home DeDe Justice in the second inning of game one. A Phyllis Manley infield single later chased home Alger for an early 2-0 Rebel advantage.
Alger, a freshman from Tulsa, struck again in her next at-bat, driving in Brooke Turner on a third-inning single that handcuffed the shortstop. The Rebels padded their total with a Britte Hardy RBI-single in the fourth.
However, the Lady 'Cocks gradually chipped away at the Ole Miss lead, picking up their first score in the third inning of a UM outfield throwing error. Back-to-back RBI-doubles by Samantha Jennings and Danielle Quinones gave USC a slim 4-3 deficit after four, and Carolina took its first lead with a pair of runs in the fifth. Amber Curtis tripled in a run and later scored on an Adrianna Baggetta RBI-groundout.
Gamecock slinger Stacey Johnson held the Rebels hitless over the final three innings for the victory, surrendering four runs on six hits in the complete-game outing. Ole Miss righthander Leslie Day went the distance in defeat though only two of the five runs-allowed were earned.
The USC bats took to the attack immediately in the late game, plating eight runs in the first three frames to chase away Rebel starter Lindsey Whatley (8-9). Quinones, Meghan Cornett and Debralee Troesh each notched two hits, while Cornett scored three times. The Lady Gamecocks were helped by four UM errors.
Aleca Johnson (7-1) hurled a two-hitter in the five-inning mercy-rule affair, collecting nine strikeouts.
Alger, who made her fourth pitching appearance of the year in game two, batted 3-for-6 with two RBI on the day.
The doubleheader sweep secured the Lady 'Cocks their fourth SEC Eastern Division title outright and the No. 2 seed in next weekend's Southeastern Conference Tournament.
Ole Miss wraps up its 2002 season Sunday in the series finale with Carolina. Game time is set for 1 p.m. ET.
