OXFORD, Miss. - In her first organized collegiate game, Brittney Potts netted a pair of goals to lead Ole Miss to a 2-0 victory over Tulsa Saturday in preseason action at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.

A two-time prep All-American, Potts came off the bench to open the scoring in the 39th minute, ripping an 18-yard shot from the top left side to the right corner of the net.

The freshman forward from Franklin, Tenn., recorded her second goal at 50:40 from 10 yards away. Tulsa goalkeeper Kelly Wilson, who notched 11 saves on the afternoon, deflected a Leigh Barrow shot, but Potts took the carom and connected with the back of the net.

"With some minor aches, Brittney Potts was only at 50 percent today," said UM head coach Steve Holeman. "She only played 30 minutes, and was still able to score two goals. It'll be great to see what she is capable of at 100 percent."

With temperatures reaching the upper-90s, the Rebels outshot the Golden Hurricane 22-6, with a 3-1 edge on cornerkicks. Juniors Brittany Gillespie and Heather Wilemon split time in goal for Ole Miss, with Gillespie registering four saves and Wilemon one.

"We're really pleased with how we played," Holeman said. "Tulsa is a great team and extremely competitive. We've trained hard in practice in anticipation for these hot conditions. As a result, our fitness showed today in this heat.

"We'd like to finish more opportunities than we did today. We need to work more on our attack system and our formations to take advantage of the opportunities given to us."

The Rebels, who are coming off their sixth straight season with a .500 or better record, officially open the 2002 campaign Friday against Marshall as part of next weekend's Ole Miss Invitational in Oxford.

Ole Miss finished the 2001 season with a 10-10-1 mark, and advanced to the semifinals of the SEC Tournament for the second time in three years. The Rebels became the only SEC Western Division squad to have earned a conference tourney berth the past five years, and is the West's winningest team over that stretch.
