OXFORD, Miss. - The Rebel newcomers went through their second day of workouts Tuesday, while the upperclassmen reported to campus to begin preparations for full squad two-a-days that start Thursday. Rebel head coach David Cutcliffe said the newcomers made strides during their two days of practice, but more will be learned of this group next week when the team practices in pads.

"We accomplished what we set out to do the last two days," Cutcliffe said. "These four practices were an introduction to the newcomers about what our demands are and what our practice tempo is like. They have a better understanding of what is going to happen Thursday (when the full squad has its first practice).

"I'm not going to make too many statements about what these newcomers can do until we've practiced in pads, and that won't happen until we have three practice days in shorts. We'll know more next week about this group."

The upperclassmen spent the day moving in and getting physicals. While there will be no practice Wednesday as the upperclassmen go through their orientation, Cutcliffe expects the returnees to be ready to go Thursday morning.

"I'm expecting our returnees to be a highly-conditioned group," said Cutcliffe. "I've heard nothing but great things about their summer work. They feel good about themselves, and I'm excited about starting practice Thursday morning."

Ole Miss opens the 2002 campaign Aug. 31 against Louisiana-Monroe. Kickoff for the season opener is 6:00 p.m. (CT).
