Bill Flowers came to Oxford to play football for the Ole Miss Rebels, but he knows that his reason for being here goes far beyond the playing field. Flowers, a sophomore from Pelham, Ala., is heavily involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) on campus. A member of FCA's leadership team, the 6-0 1/2, 193-pound wide receiver helps prepare weekly meetings and Bible studies. According to Flowers, FCA helps him get through the tough times that he faces as a student-athlete.
"FCA at Ole Miss is a great experience for me," said Flowers, who had 28 catches for 315 yards and four TDs last year. "I knew coming in as a freshman that there were going to be times when I wasn't going to be happy. One of the reasons I came to Ole Miss was FCA. It enables me to lean on my fellow Christian student-athletes for support, especially when things aren't going well."
Another reason Flowers' path led him to Oxford was Wes Yeary, Ole Miss' director of FCA.
"I have known Wes since I was a kid, and he is another reason I chose to come to Ole Miss," Flowers said. "He has been like a big brother to me. I knew that, if I came here, Wes would help strengthen my walk with Christ."
Flowers also spends a lot of time speaking at various churches and youth groups, with his most recent talk taking place Sept. 8 for Rebel Day at North Oxford Baptist Church. Flowers believes the reason he is playing football is to glorify the Lord, and he plans to continue his football career after Ole Miss and use it as a platform to speak to children and youth groups about Christ.
