OXFORD, Miss. - The 36th-ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team got just what it wanted in its first match of the season, shutting out Jacksonville State 7-0 Saturday morning at the Gillom Sports Center.

"This was exactly what we needed,"head coach Mark Beyers said. "It's nice to get a win, but more importantly for us to play against somebody other than ourselves. The extra pressure of playing a match will help us next weekend against two very tough opponents. It was good to work on things in a match situation, and now we know what we need to improve on."

The Lady Rebels wasted little time getting on the board first, winning the doubles point in less than an hour. Ole Miss won at No. 3 doubles 8-0 and then posted 8-2 victories at the top two spots to take the 1-0 lead.

In singles, Karem Harboe downed JSU's Zeynep Gurykaynak 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles to make it 2-0. Florencia Basile took care of the Gamecocks' Elisa Benhaim 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and then Mira Radu clinched the win by defeating JSU's No. 1 player, Sally Pearson 6-2, 6-4.

Freshman Virginia Tomatis picked up her first dual match win of her career, cruising to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Michelle Dushner at No. 4 singles. Audra Adams blanked Heather Miller 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot and then Sabrina Peppl finished it off by downing Gaby Baca 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.

The Lady Rebels must now get ready to face two of the nation's top teams next week in Williamsburg, Va. They will face No. 16 William & Mary on Jan. 24 and then No. 6 Arizona State on Jan. 25.
