Women's Tennis Shutout At No. 16 William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The 36th-ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team got off to a slow start against No. 16 William & Mary and never recovered, suffering a 7-0 shutout at McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center Friday evening.
William & Mary (1-0) took it to the Lady Rebels (1-1) right away, winning all three doubles positions in commanding fashion. They won at No. 1 doubles 8-3, and then the second and third teams followed suit with 8-4 and 8-2 victories respectively.
After the Tribe posted straight set wins at the No. 4 and 5 spots in singles, Ole Miss found itself in a 3-0 hole quickly. Freshman Virginia Tomatis lost to Nina Kamp 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4 singles, and then Audra Adams dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Lena Sherbakov at No. 5 singles. Megan Muth, ranked 50th in the country, downed Lady Rebel Florencia Basile 6-2, 6-2 on court two to seal the win.
Ole Miss did claim three first sets, in three of the matches, but couldn't hang on in the second sets. The featured match of the night pitted No. 8 ranked Mira Radu of Ole Miss against 40th-ranked Candice Fuchs. Radu won the first set 6-4, but Fuchs rallied to take the second 6-1. With the team match already decided, the two battled in a third-set supertiebreaker, which Radu lost 10-7.
"We just got off to a slow start in doubles, and couldn't recover in time," head coach Mark Beyers said. "We won three first sets on three courts, but couldn't capatalize on any of them."
The Lady Rebels have little time to think about the loss, as they prepare to play No. 6 Arizona State Saturday at 12 p.m., at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
