OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss senior defensive lineman Jesse Mitchell underwent a meniscectomy of the lateral meniscus in his left knee here Monday at the Oxford Surgery Center.
"Dr. Ed Field shaved Jesse's torn lateral meniscus and the surgery went well," said Ole Miss head athletic trainer Tim Mullins. "Jesse started his rehab Monday afternoon and, although he is out for an indefinite time, the prognosis is good for his return."
Mitchell, a 6-1, 270 pound team captain from Moss Point, Miss., has appeared in all six games this season, but saw only limited action in the early stages of last Saturday's game with Arkansas State.
He currently ranks second on the team for most tackles with Travis Blanchard as both have been credited with 32 hits. Mitchell also has five and one-half tackles for loss, one quarterback sack, four QB hurries, and one fumble recovery.
Meanwhile, Mullins also announced that he is still awaiting a final MRI reading on the left knee of redshirt freshman running back Jamal Pittman of Columbia, Miss., who sustained the injury in the Arkansas State game.
"We are checking on the severity of his ACL tear as well as other anatomical findings," Mullins said.
