Volleyball Falls To Kentucky 3-1 In Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Ole Miss volleyball team lost another tough match, this time falling to Kentucky 3-1 Sunday at Memorial Coliseum. Kentucky (10-6, 2-2) won the first game 30-18, but Ole Miss (2-15, 1-3) rallied to win the second game, 30-28, before the Wildcats took games three and four 30-22 and 30-27, for the victory.
Junior Elena Garcia recorded her 11th double-double of the season, finishing with 17 kills and 10 digs to lead the Lady Rebels. Sophomore middle blocker Rachel Refenes added 10 kills and three blocks. Junior Mary Nell Bennett chipped in 15 digs. Kentucky was led by junior outside hitter Sarah Spinner's double-double of 21 kills and 11 digs. Freshman outside hitter Melissa Popp also had 21 kills, and Sissy Canfield added 19 kills in the win for the Wildcats. Kentucky hit .247 for the match, while Ole Miss hit only .148.
With the score tied at three in game one, Kentucky won eight straight points to jump ahead 11-3. Ole Miss never got any closer the rest of the way as the Wildcats went on to win the game 30-18. Kentucky's Spinner led the way for the Wildcats with seven kills and a .462 hitting percentage. Spinner equaled the Lady Rebels' total kill output of game one.
Ole Miss led game two 8-5, but then Kentucky won three in a row to tie it. The two teams then battled back and forth until late in the game. Tied at 26, Ole Miss won three consecutive points to take a 29-26 lead. Kentucky won the next two points to get within in one (29-28). Following an Ole Miss timeout, Refenes put the next ball down to give the Lady Rebels' the game 30-26 and even the match at one game a piece. After hitting .000 in the first game, the Lady Rebels rebounded to hit .385 in game two.
Game three went back and forth until at 11-11, Kentucky won four points in a row to go up 15-11 as Ole Miss used its first timeout of the game. Down 20-16, the Lady Rebels won three straight points to get within one (20-19). Kentucky answered, winning the next six points to increase their lead to seven, 26-19. The Wildcats went on to take the game 30-22 and a 2-1 lead in the match.
With game four tied at four, Kentucky won seven of the next eight points to take an 11-5 lead. After an Ole Miss timeout, the Lady Rebels won three straight points to get within 11-8 as Kentucky used its first timeout. Kentucky led 16-13, when Ole Miss won three consecutive points to tie it. Three straight attack errors by Ole Miss put them down three (19-16) again. The Lady Rebels responded, going on a 6-2 run to take a 22-21 lead. Kentucky stopped the run and won four in a row to go ahead 25-22. Kentucky led 27-25, but a service error by Wildcat Danielle Wallace got the Lady Rebels to within one (27-26). Kentucky won the next two points to go up 29-26. Ole Miss held off one match point to trail 29-27, but Julie Davis sent the ball down on the next rally to clinch the game 30-27 and the match for Kentucky.
The Lady Rebels return home to host LSU and Arkansas this weekend for Alumni Weekend at the Gillom Sports Center. Friday night's match against Arkansas is Greek Night.
