The Ole Miss volleyball team will host Tennessee in the regular season finale Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Gillom Sports Center. It will also be senior day, and the Lady Rebels will honor their lone senior, Karla Zschau.
The Lady Rebels (7-23, 5-10) are coming off a huge 3-0 win over arch-rival Mississippi State Wednesday night. Junior outside hitter Elena Garcia posted her 17th double-double of the season with 12 kills and 17 digs. She needs 12 kills to record her 900th career kill.
Freshman setter Jennifer McGowan (Gresham, Ore.) has had a solid debut for the Rebels, and with her 37 assists against Mississippi State, she cracked the top 10 for single season assists. McGowan has 1,041 assists this season, becoming only the third Lady Rebel to make the top 10 as a freshman.
"When you consider that Jen didn't set all by herself until conference season, this is a remarkable accomplishment," head coach Joe Getzin said. She has done a good job for us this season and has a bright future here."
Prior to the start of SEC play, McGowan split time at setter with the 2002 Florida JUCO Player of the Year, Lucianna Lima. Since then she has started every match at setter and ranks among the top 10 in SEC matches only with 11.22 assists per game.
Tennessee enters the match with an 18-8 overall record, 8-6 in the SEC. They are coming off a split of last weekend's matches, falling to Kentucky 3-1 and then defeating South Carolina 3-1. The Lady Vols are led by Kristen Andre, who comes averaging 3.45 kills per game. Sophomore Julie Knytych leads the team with 2.99 digs per game. Tennessee is averaging 15.98 kills per game and 16.92 digs per game to rank in the conference second and first respectively.
"We are playing well at the end of the season," Getzin said. "We just need to take care of business against Tennessee and see what happens. That's all we can do. But, I am pleased with what we are doing right now."
Ole Miss will be looking to snap a seven-match losing streak to the Lady Vols, who lead the series 25-4. The Lady Rebels are also looking for their first win against Tennessee in Oxford.
Fans in attendance will get to enjoy ice cream after the match with the Lady Rebels.
