Manning Named As Finalist For Socrates Award

OXFORD, Miss. - Eli Manning has been named as a finalist for the Sporting News Radio Socrates Award, presented in conjunction with the March of Dimes, to honor a student-athlete who demonstrates excellence in the academics, athletics and citizenship.

In a unique twist, the public helps determine the recipient of the award through online voting. Fans can go to the Sporting News Radio website, www.socratesaward.com, to review each candidate's profile and select their choice. The winner of the online vote will receiver one-third of the total possible vote for the award.

A Second Team Academic-All America selection in 2002, Manning has earned Academic All-Southeastern Conference honors three times and First Team Academic All-District VI honors twice. Listed in Who's Who Among American Universities and Colleges, he is a member of the Chancellor's, Dean's and UMAA Honor Rolls.

Manning was also named to the National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete team, receiving an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship. He also was named the winner of the 2003 Unitas Award for the nation's top senior quarterback.

This year's nominees for the Socrates Award include: Nick Brown (football, place-kicker - TCU), Alvin Cowan (football, place-kicker - Yale), Nate Kaeding (football, place-kicker - Iowa), Eli Manning (football, quarterback - Ole Miss), Vanessa Pruzinsky (soccer, defender - Notre Dame), Rodney Reed (football, offensive tackle - LSU), John Standeford (football, receiver - Purdue), and Jordan Walker (soccer, defender - North Carolina).

Nominees must be: A student-athlete that embodies the Socrates creed "Strong Mind in a Strong Body," the successful candidate will have shown himself or herself to be a leader and quality contributor in their sport(s), an outstanding student academically, and be considered a quality citizen in their community; and currently enrolled in the university or college of nomination.

Past winners of the award include Drew Brees (Purdue, 2000), Ben Hamilton (Minnesota, 2001), Andre' Davis (Virginia Tech, 2002), and Craig Krenzel (Ohio State, 2003).
