Lady Rebels Fall To Chattanooga, 79-77, In Overtime

Nicole Mattison had a chance to give Chattanooga a one-point lead in regulation with 6.2 seconds left, but missed the first of two free throws, thus sending the game into overtime. Mattison made good on her second chance at glory as she hit a 10-foot jumper with 1.2 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Lady Mocs a 79-77 victory over visiting Ole Miss.
"This was a great college basketball game," said Ole Miss head coach Carol Ross. "Mattison made a great shot at the end of the game and sometimes great shots will undo you."
Ole Miss led 3-0 to start the game behind a lay-up by junior center Amber Watts and a free throw by senior guard Genice Terry. Chattanooga then took control of the game for the next six minutes, as they went on a 17-0 run to take a 14-point lead with 13 minutes remaining in the first frame.
The Lady Rebels got back in the game behind sophomore guard Ashley Johnson's eight points and seven rebounds. Johnson led the Lady Rebels on a 15-2 run mid-way through the half, and both teams headed to the break with 30 points on the scoreboard.
The second half began much the same the first half did as Chattanooga jumped out to an 11-point lead at the 13:13 mark. With their backs to the wall, Ole Miss again went to work, scoring 11-straight points to knot the score at 50-50.
Watts scored 15 second-half points to help Ole Miss forge an eight point lead at the 4:10 mark, before Katie Galloway scored seven points to bring UTC right back into the game. UTC took a one-point lead at 67-66 with 1:27 remaining in regulation. Terry made one-of-two free throws to tie the game with 1:09 left in the second half.
Katasha Brown then made a lay-up for the Lady Mocs, but missed a free throw with 52 seconds left on the clock. Terry then drilled a three-pointer with 38 seconds to give Ole Miss a one-point lead before Mattison went to the line with 6.2 seconds remaining.
Ole Miss got the ball off the tip in overtime, but neither team could score for the first minute and a half of overtime. Junior guard Carletta Brown made two free throws to give the Lady Rebels a two-point lead. The two teams traded baskets with freshman guard Ashley Johnson tying the game at 77 on a driving lay-up with 6.8 seconds remaining. Mattison got the ball on the wing and drove near the lane before putting up the game-winning shot for UTC.
Watts led three players in double figures for Ole Miss with 17 points. Terry totaled 15 points, four steals and four rebounds for the Lady Rebels, while Brown added 14 points and seven assists. Freshman forward Armintie Price nearly notched her fifth-straight double-double with eight points and 12 rebounds. Price also collected a season-high six steals. Johnson finished with eight points and a career-high nine rebounds.
Brown and Tiffani Roberson led UTC with 22 points each, while Galloway added 15 points and six assists. Brown and Roberson were both in double figures in rebounding as well with 11 and 12, respectively.
Ole Miss connected on 30-of-79 shots from the field, good for 38 percent. They made 5-of-16 from the three-point line and 12-of-19 from the free throw line. The Lady Rebels tallied six blocks and 16 steals and forced 26 Lady Moc turnovers.
UTC made 29-of-62 shots from the field, good for 46.8 percent. They connected on 4-of-13 from the three-point line and 17-of-30 shots from the foul line. UTC out-rebounded Ole Miss 49-44.
Ole Miss will take a week off of action during finals, before returning to the court on Sunday, Dec. 14, when the Lady Rebels travel to Nashville, Tenn., to take on Lipscomb at 2 p.m.
