OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss is ranked No. 25 in this week's Baseball America Top 25 poll after winning a pair of games from Louisiana Tech in a rain-shortened series last weekend at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
The Rebels opened the season unranked in any of the four major college baseball polls, but were ranked No. 30 in Baseball America's preseason Top 30.
Ole Miss defeated Louisiana Tech 3-2 in the season opener, which was suspended on Friday after two innings before being resumed Sunday afternoon. The Rebels then won Sunday's regularly scheduled game 17-5. Saturday's game was lost due to the weather and no make-up date or a replacement game has been announced.
Ole Miss will host SW Missouri State Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field to conclude a season-opening home stand.
The Bears opened their season last weekend by going 2-1 at the Texas-Arlington Invitational. SW Missouri State opened the tournament with wins over Arkansas State (6-3) and UT-Arlington (10-3) before falling 10-2 to New Mexico on Sunday.
Freshman left-hander Brae Wright is scheduled to make his first career start for Ole Miss against the Bears. Wright, from Southaven, Miss., worked 1 1/3 innings of relief in the 17-5 win over Louisiana Tech. He allowed one run on one hit and one walk, and also struck out one.
Freshman southpaw Stephen Head picked up a save in his first career appearance in the 3-2 win over the Bulldogs, and then went 3-for-5 with one home run and five RBIs in the following game. He also doubled and tripled to finish a single shy of hitting for the cycle.
Sophomore outfielder Seth Smith went 4-for-9 with three RBIs, and senior shortstop Chad Sterbens was 3-for-7 with four RBIs for the weekend.
Wednesday's game can be heard locally in Oxford on WTNM Supertalk Mississippi 105.5 FM. Air time is 2:45 p.m.
