OXFORD, Miss. - After a long layoff, the Ole Miss softball team finally saw good weather and responded with an 8-0 thumping of Central Connecticut Friday in day one of the Ole Miss Snowfall Classic.

The Rebels (4-5) continue tournament play Saturday, matching up with Northern Illinois at 1 p.m. CST and Drake at 5. The full slate of games begins at 9 a.m. at Ole Miss Softball Complex.

Facing competition for the first time since Feb. 16, the Rebels turned in their biggest offensive output in seven games. After a pair scoreless innings, Ole Miss struck in the third as Jordan Chitwood walked and scored on a Brooke Turner RBI-single.

The Rebel offense really broke out two innings later with a seven-run fifth to end the game by mercy rule. The first eight Ole Miss batters reached base and 10 of 11 got on in the frame.

Britte Hardy singled home the first run, and DeDe Justice followed with a three-run, bases-clearing triple to key the rally. Justice then reached home on the back end of a double steal, as did Stacy McCommon later in the frame. Jenny Cox registered two hits in the inning.

Rebel hurler Leslie Day continued her dominance on the mound, allowing only three hits in recording her second shutout of the season. The senior from Nesbit, Miss., boasts a 3-0 record and has yet to surrender a run in four appearances this year.

Danielle Cyr suffered the loss for the Blue Devils (0-1), who were opening their 2003 campaign.

The Snowfall Classic, which was organized midway through the week after winter weather cancelled numerous other tournaments around the nation, featured only one other game on Friday - a Drake 2-0 victory over UT-Martin.
