OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's tennis team will host 42nd-ranked Tulane University Saturday at 11 a.m., prior to the men's basketball game against Kentucky. The match will be played at the Gillom Sports Center.
"Tulane is much better than their ranking indicates," head coach Mark Beyers said. "They have a great player at the top of the lineup and are solid throughout. It should be a good match. We would like to encourage all our fans to come out and see some exciting college tennis before heading over to the coliseum to watch the men's basketball game against Kentucky."
The Lady Rebels (2-2) evened their record last Sunday with a dominating 7-0 win over Memphis. It marked the first outdoor match of the season for the Lady Rebels. Ole Miss won all three doubles matches 8-6 to take a 1-0 lead in the match. In singles, the Lady Rebels needed barely two hours to finish off the Lady Tigers, winning every contest in straight sets.
Senior Mira Radu, ranked No. 8 in the nation, leads the team with a 10-4 record. Freshman Virginia Tomatis has won six of her last seven matches and three of her first four dual matches for an 8-4 record.
Tulane rallied to defeat No. 50 Florida State 4-3 last Saturday to improve to 3-0 on the season. Saturday's featured match should be a good one, as the GreenWave boast one of the top players in the country in freshman Julie Smekodub, who is ranked No. 10 in the nation. They also feature the top doubles team in the country in Smekodub and Jenny Kuhn. Smekodub and Kuhn earned the No. 1 doubles ranking after winning the ITA National Indoor doubles title in November.
