ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The Ole Miss softball team took an early lead against Jacksonville but lost the chance for a victory due to heavy rain in the St. Augustine area. The game, which was part of the final round of the Triple Crown Classic, will not be rescheduled.
After posting a 1-3 mark in tournament play, the Rebels were looking to close out the event on a winning note, holding a 4-0 advantage when play was stopped in the top of the third inning.
Sophomore DeDe Justice led off the second inning with a long home run to left centerfield to open a four-run rally. Desiree Layman and Megan Kozar drove in runs, while Jenny Cox reached home on the tail end of a double steal. Cox was also at the plate with two runners on when the game ended in the third.
Rebel hurler Leslie Day had two strikeouts and one hit surrendered through two innings.
Statistics from Sunday's contest will not count toward season totals.
Ole Miss kicked off the Triple Crown Classic Friday with a pitchers' duel against Kansas. The 10-inning affair saw Lindsay Price tie the UM school record for strikeouts with 14, but the Rebels fall short to the Jayhawks, 2-1.
Ole Miss bounced back with a 5-0 whipping of Bethune-Cookman. Day recorded the first one-hit shutout of her UM career, and Justice batted 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs against the Wildcats.
The Rebels dropped a pair of tight games Saturday, losing to UCF, 5-4 despite an Andrea Brahs three-run homer, and Southern Illinois, 3-1 although Price turned in another quality start.
Ole Miss takes a 3-3 mark on the young season into its own tournament, the Rebel/Easton Invitational, next weekend in Oxford. The Rebels will be joined by Indiana State, Jacksonville State, Mississippi State, Nicholls State, Samford and UT-Martin in games all day Saturday and Sunday at two venues - the Ole Miss Softball Complex and Airport Field in the Oxford Softball and Soccer Complex.
