Women's Tennis Loses Nail-Biter At South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The 39th-ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team lost a nail-biter, 4-3 to 24th-ranked South Carolina Sunday afternoon at the Maxcy Gregg Tennis Facility. The Lady Rebels dropped to 3-7 overall and 0-2 in the SEC, while the Gamecocks improved to 6-1 and 2-0 in the SEC.

South Carolina won the doubles point in convincing fashion, and that would prove to be the difference in the match as the two teams split the singles. Ole Miss' Karem Harboe and Florencia Basile took the No. 3 doubles 8-3 over Justine Walsh and Catherine Brown, but South Carolina won at No. 1 and 2 doubles 8-1.

Ole Miss fell behind 2-0 when Basile lost to Jodi Kenoyer 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Junior Audra Adams downed Walsh 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles to make it 2-1. Sabrina Peppl then defeated USC's Brown 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles to even the match at 2-2.

The Gamecocks regained the lead (3-2) when Danielle Wiggins held off Lady Rebel Harboe 6-2, 6-4 on court three. Senior Mira Radu rebounded from a disappointing showing in doubles to post a 4-6, 6-0, 6-0 win over Kathy Boyanovich at No.1 singles to square the match at 3-3.

That left No. 4 singles to decide the match with Ole Miss freshman Virginia Tomatis having won the first set 6-2 against Gamecock, Magda Wojdylo. Wojdylo jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second set, before Tomatis would come back to even the score at 5. Wojdylo went on to win the second set 7-5 to force the deciding set that would determine the outcome. Tomatis lost the third set 6-3 as South Carolina clinched the win.

It doesn't get any easier for the Lady Rebels, who continue on the road next weekend at No. 18 Kentucky and No. 9 Vanderbilt.
