Rebels Drop Softball Series Finale with Auburn

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss bats never got on track as the Rebel softball team dropped the finale of its three-game set with Auburn Sunday, 4-0. Ole Miss (12-18, 3-6 SEC) suffers its first SEC series sweep of the year.
Kristin Keyes (3-9) kept the Rebels scoreless for the weekend as she hurled her second shutout of the series and the Tigers' third. The AU righthander limited Ole Miss to four hits with 12 strikeouts.
Auburn (17-18, 6-6 SEC) jumped ahead 2-0 in the second inning after Sara Dean doubled and scored on an errant throw, and Martha Phillips followed with a solo home run.
Ole Miss threatened in the third when Phyllis Manley and Stacy McCommon opened the frame with back-to-back singles. A Britte Hardy sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third base, but a strikeout and groundout would leave the Rebels empty-handed.
In the fourth inning, a DeDe Justice single and Jordan Chitwood double would again place Rebels at second and third, but neither could reach home. Chitwood, whose sister Lindsey is the Tigers' starting second baseman, notched a pair of hits on the weekend.
Auburn padded its lead in the fifth on a two-run triple by Ashley Griffin, who collected six extra-base hits in the series.
Ole Miss senior Lindsay Price (7-8) endured her second complete-game loss in as many days, scattering six hits while striking out six.
Looking to snap the three-game skid, the Rebels play their next eight games away from Oxford, beginning Wednesday with a doubleheader at UT-Martin. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. CST at Bettye Giles Field in Martin, Tenn.
Ole Miss boasts a 3-0 all-time series edge over the Skyhawks.
