OXFORD, Miss. - Sophomore right-hander Alan Johnson pitched a complete-game two-hitter in No. 9 Mississippi State's 7-0 win over No. 29 Ole Miss in game two of this weekend's three-game Southeastern Conference series Saturday afternoon, in front of 5,752 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. With the win, the Bulldogs (21-3-1, 7-1 SEC) clinched this weekend's series, as Mississippi State blanked the Rebels (17-9, 5-3 SEC) 2-0 on Friday.
The victory marked Mississippi State's seventh straight and the Bulldogs fifth straight over Ole Miss. Mississippi State has also now won six of the last seven series against the Rebels.
Johnson (4-0) retired the final 17 batters he faced after issuing a one-out walk to Seth Smith in the fourth inning en route to recording his first career complete game.
With the back-to-back shutouts by Mississippi State, Ole Miss has not scored a run in 20 innings since scoring three in the sixth inning of this past Wednesday's game with Southern Miss. It also marked the first time the Rebels had been shutout in back-to-back games since April 3-4 at Florida, and the first time at home since Mississippi State blanked Ole Miss in both games of a doubleheader on May 13, 1990.
Craig Tatum supplied all the offense Mississippi State would need with a two-run home run in the third inning.
The Bulldogs recorded only seven hits on the afternoon but took advantage of a season-high five Ole Miss errors.
T.J. Beam (3-1) suffered the loss, allowing six runs, four earned, on six hits and one walk. He struck out six.
Steve Gendron and Jon Mungle recorded two hits each for the Bulldogs. Matthew Maniscalco went 1-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 12 games.
Jonathan Swearingen and Chad Sterbens recorded the two hits for the Rebels. Sterbens' hit extended his hitting streak to 10 games and has now recorded at least one hit in 42 of the last 43 games against SEC teams.
Mississippi State will look to complete the sweep when the two teams conclude the series Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Sophomore left-hander Todd Nicholas (3-0, 1.65 ERA) is scheduled to start on the mound for the Bulldogs versus the Rebel redshirt freshman southpaw Eric Fowler (1-1, 2.73 ERA).
