OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss volleyball team wrapped up its spring season last weekend by hosting the Ole Miss Spring Tournament. They also traveled to Alabama for a tournament this spring.

Head Coach Joe Getzin, who will begin his second season this fall, was pleased with the team's play this spring, despite not having a full compliment of players.

"We've had some players who decided to move on and pursue other interests," Getzin said. "Mary Nell stepped up as our setter for the spring and a did a phenomenal job considering she was playing out of position. Elena Garcia continues to improve in her attacking, and Rachel Refenes made significant improvements at the net. Karla Zschau, our lone senior for next year, provided a lot of ball control for us, and Megan McCune played solidly."

Garcia led the 2002 squad with 260 kills and 267 digs. She averaged 3.02 kills and 3.10 digs per game and passed the 500 mark in kills and digs. She will enter the 2003 season needing 490 kills and 498 digs to become a member of the 1,000/1,000 club.

Sophomore Stacy Spears played for the first time since 2001 this spring, in a limited role. She continues to work through back problems that kept her out of action during the 2002 season.

The Lady Rebels will spend the next few months working out on their own before returning to campus in August for the start of pre-season workouts for the 2003 season. They open the 2003 schedule August 29-30 at the Baylor Tournament in Waco, Texas.
