OXFORD, Miss. - Patricia Eble of Marietta, Ga., and Jennifer McGowan of Gresham, Ore., have signed to play volleyball at the University of Mississippi beginning in the fall of 2003 Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin announced Wednesday.
Eble, a 6-2 middle blocker, comes to Ole Miss as a transfer from Western Carolina University, where she spent the previous two seasons. In 2001, Eble was the starting right side hitter, and in 2002, she moved to middle blocker and started. She finished last year with 393 kills (second on the team), 120 blocks (first on the team) and a .279 hitting percentage. Eble ranked third in the Southern Conference rankings in blocks per game (1.00) and ninth in kills per game (3.28). She set the school record for hitting percentage in a match with .733 (11-0-15) versus The Citadel.
A standout at Marietta High School, Eble earned first-team All-State honors during her senior year (2000). She left there as the school career leader in kills, blocks, digs, aces and hitting percentage. Eble helped lead her team to the 2000 5-A State Championship match. She also played two years for the North Atlanta Volleyball Club and three years for the Atlanta Juniors, who won the Southeast Region and participated in the national tournament in 1999.
"Tricia brings us much needed depth at the Middle Blocker position," Getzin, who will begin his second season at the helm of the Ole Miss volleyball program, said. "She will bring some maturity to the team with her experience and should be vying for a starting position."
McGowan, a 5-10 setter, hails from Gresham High School where she lettered in volleyball and track. She earned first-team All-Conference honors as a defensive specialist in 2002 and was voted Most Inspirational by her teammates in 2002. McGowan helped lead her team to back-to-back State Championships in 2001 and 2002. She played club volleyball for Nike Northwest Volleyball and participated in the Junior Olympics in 2001.
"Jennifer brings a competitive spirit with an enthusiasm for the game," Getzin said. She has a high level of experience playing for one of the top 10 junior programs in the nation. I look for her to make an immediate impact. We hope to utilize her right away."
The Lady Rebels open the 2003 season Aug 29-30 at the Baylor Tournament in Waco, Texas.
